Village of Grand River, Ohio

Welcome to the Village of Grand River!

Where the Grand River meets Lake Erie, you’ll find one of Northeast Ohio’s most inviting waterfront communities. The Village of Grand River blends scenic shoreline views, riverfront charm, and a welcoming small-town atmosphere — all just 30 miles east of Cleveland.

Perfectly positioned between the City of Mentor and Painesville Township, Grand River offers visitors an easy escape with a relaxed coastal feel. Spend the day enjoying locally loved restaurants, exploring the riverfront, visiting our community park, or simply taking in the natural beauty that defines our village. Whether arriving by road or by water, you’ll quickly discover that Grand River is a destination worth experiencing.

Beyond its beautiful setting, Grand River is proud of its history and community pride. The village is the hometown of Don Shula, the legendary professional football coach who led the Miami Dolphins to two Super Bowl victories, including the historic undefeated 1972 season.

In 2026, the Village of Grand River continues to honor its rich heritage while embracing a vibrant future — supporting local businesses, strengthening public services, and welcoming residents and visitors alike to experience everything our waterfront community has to offer.

The Grand River: From Frozen Stillness to Rising Waters

Nature has shown its incredible power along the Grand River this week. These images capture the dramatic transition as the winter ice began to break up, leading to significant flooding along the riverbanks. In the "before" photos, you can see the ice along the waterway. In the "after" shots, the sheer force of the thaw is evident as water overflows into low-lying areas of the shoreline.

Winter Safety Tip

In Ohio, residents are responsible for keeping fire hydrants clear of snow and ice during the winter to ensure quick access for firefighters. You should clear at least a three-foot area around the hydrant and, if possible, create a path from the hydrant to the street. This act is crucial because snow-covered hydrants delay emergency response time, potentially costing lives.

How to keep fire hydrants clear

  • Maintain a three-foot radius: Create a clear space of at least three feet in all directions around the base of the hydrant.
  • Clear a path to the street: If possible, shovel a path from the hydrant leading directly to the street so firefighters can easily access it from multiple points.
  • Keep it visible: Make sure the hydrant is visible from the street after clearing the snow.
  • Check regularly: After each snow event, check and clear any new snow accumulation around the hydrant.
  • Follow Ohio Fire Code: The Ohio Fire Code mandates maintaining this clear space and prohibits placing posts, fences, or other objects near hydrants
