The Grand River Fire Department (GRFD) has proudly served the community since 1898, when it began with two hand-pulled hose carts protecting the residents of the Village of Grand River. Over more than a century, the department has grown and evolved alongside the community it serves, developing into a modern, professional Fire and Rescue Department.
Today, GRFD is an ISO Class 2-rated department, reflecting its high standards, advanced capabilities, and commitment to excellence in emergency response. As part of a historic cooperative agreement between the Village of Grand River and Painesville Township, the fire station remains owned by the Village of Grand River, including its facilities and equipment, while staffing and daily fire and EMS operations are provided by the Painesville Township Fire Department.
Under this partnership, the Grand River station is fully manned by Painesville Township Fire personnel, ensuring consistent, high-level fire and emergency medical services 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. This agreement strengthens fire and EMS protection for both the Village of Grand River and the northwestern portion of Painesville Township, while continuing the long-standing tradition of cooperation between the two communities.
This collaboration honors the proud history of the Grand River Fire Department while ensuring that residents and businesses receive the highest level of professional fire and EMS service now and into the future.
In Ohio, residents are responsible for keeping fire hydrants clear of snow and ice during the winter to ensure quick access for firefighters. You should clear at least a three-foot area around the hydrant and, if possible, create a path from the hydrant to the street. This act is crucial because snow-covered hydrants delay emergency response time, potentially costing lives.
